At Lusowest high quality wines are a must and at all different price levels. We constantly search for the best wines we can find with quality being our driving focus. Our wines are sourced from some of the best, quality conscious producers in Portugal and for the first time are being imported into the UK market exclusively by Lusowest.
Our Portuguese wine portfolio is extensive and includes wines from various regions of Portugal. It is the most extensive one ever offered to the UK market at very competitive prices.
Unlike some wines which are made up from a blend of different regions and countries, our wines are region specific, produced entirely from Portuguese casts - each producer using only grapes grown in their own demarcation region. The Portuguese government insist on strict controls by the Institute IVV and so quality is assured.
In addition to this they are all bottled in the traditional way using high quality Portuguese cork, as Portugal is known as one of the world producers of cork, as opposed to the now very common screw cap that is used by many wine producers.
All our wine producers have gained awards at national and international levels and some of these wines are surprisingly priced similar to what you would pay for non-awarded wines. Even our table wines are of a high quality. Please scroll down the page to view our exclusive and impressive Wine List. We guarantee you won't be disappointed.

RAPOSEIRA - THE CELLARS
The prestige of the wines from de Lamego region, which dates back to the 16th century, was definitively established with the sparkling wines produced by Raposeira, a company founded more than 100 years ago.
Studies carried out at the time by company's owners in the famous Champagne region in France, combined with a series of trials performed in Lamego by the company, were instrumental in creating the personality of some of Portugal's most esteemed sparkling wines.
Lamego, a land of great nobility that holds a significant place in Portuguese history, was, accordingly, the birthplace oh this wine. Even though the raw material comes from the original Champagne grape varieties, this wine has made its mark as a quintessentially Portuguese product.
Raposeira has, over the years, achieved a solid market position, thanks to the high quality of the sparkling wines produced. This quality has provided the company's wines with almost constant leadership of the Portuguese market.
Raposeira selects, transports and converts the grapes into wine employing the utmost care, the highest levels of professionalism and meticulous quality control.
Each production stage is closely monitored by wine experts, whose scientific knowledge incorporates a century of accumulated experience.
The second fermentation process is performed in the bottle according to the traditional champagne, or classic method. The wine and the natural fermenting agents undergo a meticulous process of evolution where humidity, light and temperature levels are fundamental.
The remuage, disgorging and fortification procedures, which are always performed by highly experienced technicians, complete the process of creating these sparkling wines, giving them a final touch of class.
Raposeira sparkling wines incorporate the intense character of the Beira-Douro region.
They are a tribute to the unmistakable flavours of the land and the persistence of its people.

ADEGA ARRUDA VINHOS |
The consumption and appeal of a wine depend greatly on its quality. The Arruda region, which is naturally gifted with splendid wine making aptitudes and century old traditions. Such aptitudes shouldn't be wasted and an economical protection should be sought. This weas the aim of a group of wine makers, who took the inititive of founding the "ADEGA COOPERATIVA DE ARRUDA DOS VINHOS", which was formally constituted in December 1954.
A quality wine distingushes itself from an ordinary wine not only by a balanced more pleasant flavour through sight, smell and taste, but also by the capability to improve its most important characteristics, namely colour, scent and flavour.
These characteristics are the result of a lucky combination of factors such as the relief, the climate, the soil and the wine varieties.
ARRUDA DOS VINHOS is a small market town lying about thirty kilometres North of Lisbon. ARRUDA is a latin-arabic name. Latin: Ruta-ae; Arabic Al, whihc became Al-Rutae then eventually Arruda. Given the prominence of the winemaking in the region it took on the full title of ARRUDA DOS VINHOS literally meaning "the road to the wines".
In 1986 it was give the demarcarted status. Arruda wines are very special due to the charateristics unique to the region suhc as:
CLIMATE:
Temperate. High humidity. Low rainfall. High level of brightness.
The terrain is naturally highly beneficial for vini-culture and is of clay/limestone.
GRAPE VARIETIES:
RED: Periquita (Joao Santarem)70%, Tinta Miuda 20%,Mortagua 10%.
WHITE: Vital 30%, Fernao Pires 30%, Arinto 20%, Jampal 20%.
VINIFICATION:
Traditional methods are still used which helps to retain their individuality.
PRODUCT:
Red Wine: 10 million lites annually.
White Wine: 2 million litres annually.
AWARDS:
Adega Cooperativa de Arruda dos Vinhos have amassed no fewer than:
84 Gold Medals and 63 Silver Medals in international competitions.

THE CANTANHEDE WINERY CO-OP
The Cantanhede Winery Co-op (CWC) was established in 1954 and is the result of a wish of a group of winegrowers determined to create the conditions to value and make profitable the high potential that was already recognized in the Cantanhede terroir. In this municipality, where viticulture dates back to the Roman period, we find the main wine production area of the Bairrada Demarcated Region.
Currently it counts with around 1400 associated winegrowers, representing a total area of 2000 hectares of vineyards; this winery is the largest producer in the region, producing around 25 to 30% of the total production.
Its dimension and subsequent responsibility taken by it in the context of the demarcated region to which it belongs, soon required that the path to follow was that of praising the typical varietals of this region, investing in the production of wine of greater quality. In the beginning it was only sold in bulk and only nine years after having been established and against the entire cooperative sector, this winery begins, before any other, to sell its bottled wines, trying to find an alternative for the differentiation of the wines from Cantanhede.
The strategy chosen soon showed results. Nowadays this winery certifies more than half of its production with Bairrada Appellation of Origin, achieving an outstanding leading role in this segment and, more recently, also in the Regional Beiras Wines.
Currently its production policy is based on an old assumption, which includes a strong investment in the Portuguese varietals, especially from Bairrada, its protection, promotion and distribution. In this context, it should be highlighted the red varietal Baga and the white varietals Bical and Maria Gomes, which are being used to produce new styles of wines, the result of both their particular characteristics and also a permanent effort to update the winemaking processes. We believe that in this way we are able to offer to the final consumer a new chance to choose by differentiation.
If updating the winemaking processes represents a permanent concern, the same happens with the accompaniment of all processes from the Vine to the Winery. In this context we appear, amongst our counterparts, as one of the first companies to have established an Associates Help Service for the Production in Integrated Protection, which is a production system which values the Respect and Non-aggression of the environment. Presently it is being carried out an evolution for the Integrated Production, which aims at having a wider knowledge and a quality control in every stage of the production process from the Vineyard to the Bottle. Another result of this concern is the strategic partnership established with BIOCANT (a company located in Cantanhede, focused on the scientific research in the Biotechnology field) at the R&D level, through which it is aimed to achieved a deeper knowledge of the genome of our main varietals, the main diseases that usually affect them and possible solutions for their most effective protection, always bearing in mind their appreciation and distinction as well as ensuring an effective protection of their identity and individuality.
The consolidation of the philosophy that guides our production process and the implemented strategy to put into practice culminated, more recently, with the award of the Quality Certificate issued by NP EN ISO 9001:2000 and the implementation of HACCP.
The external market represents nowadays almost 20% of the turnover, with the presence of our products in the most demanding worldwide markets, with a special remark to Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Canada, amongst many others. As far as the external market is concerned, it is worth mentioning the establishment in 2003 of the company «Beiras Alimentar», in Mozambique, aimed at creating in that former Portuguese colony a platform that allowed working more directly with the Portuguese speaking countries in Africa.

1. Introduction
IN THE DOURO VINEYARDS A WORLD HERITAGE IN THE ONLY PORT WINE PRODUCING REGION IN THE WORLD CAVES SANTA MARTA (Santa Marta Wine Cellars) is a well known name in the wine producing world, both in Portugal and in the Douro Region. It is part of the Oldest Denominated, Demarcated and Regulated Region since 1756, listed as amongst the biggest producers of PORT WINES and DOURO APPELLATION WINES. A prestigious name also beyond our borders where our wines are prize winners.
A large cellers Institution: both in production volume – an average of 12 million litres, of wich 3 million are Port Wine, about 5% of the total Port production, and also in the number of co-operativa members – over 2 thousand. The entrepreneurial dimension of the Caves Santa Marta is vast, even more so when we consider its difficult implantation made worse by the accentuated oreography, proper of the genuine mountain wines, which is the case here. Grapes harvested between 150 to 600 metres above sea level with a very high solar incidence due to the slope.
This is the pride of all those who are connected with or participate in the mission of the Caves Santa Marta. Winners because of the high quality standards accomplished, resulting in the great demand for the products. Also the social and human environment, that besides the natural surroundings – with the Reconstitution of the Vineyards, and the Replacement with Noble Grape varieties, the Integrated Systems of Protection – it also benefits from the action of the cellers Enterprise, which is technically well structured and competent, partly due to the human resources and the adjustment and continuous upgrading of the procedures and the equipment.
Implanted in a sea of vineyards which is the Council of Santa Marta de Penaguião, of untold beauty on the Eastern slope of the Marão mountain, with the Corgo river at its foot and the Douro river within sight, a little below; brown coloured in the dormant period, various greens in the vegetative lushness, rust and yellow at harvest time; part of an ancient history and century old manor houses, implanted in this fertile schistose and clay ground.
In this climate that both benefits and conditions the production of wine, retaining the water and maintaining the heat; there is no room for another vine plant, for historical and economical reasons the area is used to the last inch/centimetre; this is the reality of the CAVES SANTA MARTA.
THIS INTRODUCTION IS ALSO AN INVITATION to visit our Wine Cellars and Wineries.
Member of the Port Wine Route, this institution can also be visited under the guidance of the Route Office as part of a bigger programme.

Founded in 1955, the Adega Coop. de Borba, was the first of a series of Cooperatives settled in the Alentejo region, promoted and helped by the "Junta Nacional do Vinho" a public organization that controlled and supervised the wine production in Portugal, at a time in which the wine production didn't carry much weight in the region. This action allowed the creation of a commercial and productive organization for the Alentejo wines, otherwise the vine culture could have completely disappear because all the existence incentives at that time were for the production of cereals in order to transform Alentejo in "the granary" of Portugal.
After 3 decades of resistance, in which only the great value of the grape varieties and the exquisite natural conditions, allowed to sustain the production of wines in Alentejo, we finally reached the decade of the '80's, where the potential of the region was evaluated and confirmed by the consumer. The region was benefited by the fact the wine production were associated to the Cooperatives, that started to acquired the most advance technologies more rapidly that in the other Portuguese regions, leaping to the production of bottle wines of great quality. It's true that the creation of the appellation of Alentejo and of the appearance of technical associative structures that rapidly spread new technologies near the winegrower were essential in the whole process.
The euphoria that the Alentejo wines have been living in the past times, results of a long and hard-work both in the vineyard, with the selection of the best grape varieties and soils, and in the winery, with the perfecting and acquisition of equipments, that most of the times don't have much visibility, in a time where the focus of the region was in other directions that not in the wine production.
Today the Adega Coop. Borba brings together 300 associates whose vineyards cover a total area of 2,200 hectares, distributed in 65% in red grape varieties and 35% in white grape varieties.
In a constant search for reinforcing the quality of their products, the Adega Coop. Borba, has today an ambitious project to bring closer the winegrower to the Winery, to inspire in him the passion of making great wines. After the selection and nursing of the best grape varieties , and the acquisition of equipment, it's the Adega Coop. Borba believe that only with the commitment of the winegrower in the wine production , is possible to improve even more their products, and achieve the full potential that the region possesses for producing exceptional wines.

ADEGA COOPERATIVA LABRUGEIRA |
The roots of Alenquer's winemaking tradition go back to the distant times of the Roman ages. Winemaking in the region has been significant for more than 700 years; it was regulated by a "Carta Forel" (legal document issued by the king) in 1240.
In Labrugeira, the Montejunto Mountains, the North Atlantic breeze, the mild Mediterranean climate work together to create a characteristic climate, which added to the selection and arrangement of the soils, and careful handling of the wine-plant define the special character of our wines.
The ancient knowledge of our farmers, their devotion to the earth and the use of modern winemaking techniques finish and enhance all the virtues of Alenquer's fabulous nectars.

ADEGA COOPERATIVA DE PALMELA
The quality of the Cooperative Cellar of Palmela was born in the region's sandy plains between the Tagus river and Sado river. This large area, influenced by proximity of the sea, soil poverty, and by low productions is the cradle of Moscatel, and vine (Periquita Castelão). For many years a large part of the population of the municipality of Palmela have been devoted to agriculture or more precisely, the viticulture. It is in this context that in the 1950s the Cooperative Cellar of Palmela, whos aims have been focused mainly on the protection of many small growers, assured disposal and fair prices for grapes.
Born with 50 associates held and approximately 1,000 hectares of vineyards of Moscatel and Castelão (Periquita), Cooperative Cellar of Palmela has today approximately 400 members, which produce an average of 10 million Kilos of optimal quality grapes.
Over the years, the Cooperative Cellar of Palmela has been upgrading their technology and manufacturing of bottling and today is a certified unit (ISO 9001-2000) capable of comparison with other firms in domestic and international markets. ADEGA DA COVILHA |
The Wine Cooperative of Covilhã, C.R.L. was founded in 1954, counting with 157 associates , having carried out its first harvest in 1957. During the first years of its existence it was better suited to the sale of wine in bulk, but later made a tentative for manual bottling.
During the 1970s a semi-automatic filling system was purchased and this led to a slight rise in sales growth of bottled wine.
With the entry of Portugal in the European Community the Wine Cooperative of Covilhã initiated a modernization process, which has been in operation sine then. In the year 2000 it has been considered the Cooperative Winery of the year.
Today it has about 800 associates in its assets, with a social and geographical area over the boundaries of the municipality of Covilhã extending its influence to municipalities of Belmonte, and spreads so as some parishes of the municipality of Guarda and Sabugal.
The average annual production potential of the Cooperative Cellars of Covilhã is about 4,000,000 litres of wine, having various trademarks distributed by wines, Vinho Regional Beiras and Vinho DOC Beira Interior.
With the renewal of vineyards made by their members in the recent years, about 500 hectares have been planted in varietal spots. The introduction of new varieties and best oenological characteristics, along with the implementation of a technological improvement in processes of transformation, paved the way for a set of quality wines medium/high average. THE COMPANY
Sivipa – Sociedade Vinícola de Palmela S.A. was established in 1964 by a group of winegrowers that got together with the aim of bottling the wines from their productions and place them on the market. In the 1990s one the families with greater tradition in the production of wines in the Palmela region, the Cardoso family, joined the company. Through their 400 hectares of vineyards and production volume of around two million liters per year, they were able to provide greater homogeneity to the wines. At this point the company started betting on certified and greater quality wines. Currently, Sivipa is a renowned society in the production of wines, including Moscatel.
THE REGION
The Península de Setúbal region occupies an area that is equivalent to the district of Setúbal and includes the relative DOC of Palmela and Setúbal, and the IG (Regional Terras do Sado).
The Peninsula de Setúbal wines are as fortified and balanced as the region where they are produced, a Region where Mother Nature was prodigal and whimsical: two peninsulas “created” by two of the largest Portuguese estuaries, rich in biodiversity, a natural park and several areas with protected landscape, the proximity to the sea combined with clearly Mediterranean influence, the “birthplace” of the most largely planted Portuguese red varietal grape (Castelão), a unique geological formation for vine cultivation and an emblematic fortified wine that continues to be enjoyed and acknowledged all over the world. The Península de Setúbal wines are a unique case of success in Portuguese winegrowing panorama.
SOILS AND CLIMATE
The Península de Setúbal region includes the entire district of Setúbal, , having its northern border in Montijo (Canha) and the opposite border in Sines; to the west the region is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, by the Arrábida mountain range and the estuaries of the Tagus and Sado rivers; to the east the border is essentially geological: the sandy soils of the so-called “Pegões Pliocene”. This “mosaic” is responsible for the unique characteristics of its wines, fresh, elegant and balanced, an absolutely unique combination the wines with strikingly Atlantic characteristics and the clearly Mediterranean wines.
GRAPE VARIETIES
This is a region with mostly red grapes, the most important red grape variety is the Castelão, but there are others with excellent results, as the Aragonês, Trincadeira, Touriga Nacional and Alfrocheiro. The foreign red grape varieties more planted are the Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Alicante Bouché. The white grape varieties more important are the Fernão Pires and Moscatel de Setúbal, this last one is the responsible for our famous fortified wine, the Moscatel de Setúbal. There are also important quantities of Arinto and Antão Vaz.
